RALEIGH, N.C., October 20, 2026 – The North Carolina Economic Development Association (NCEDA) Foundation has received a $20,000 grant from Norfolk Southern through its Thriving Communities Grant Program. The funding will support the Foundation's Fellowship and Career Trek programs, which introduce students and emerging professionals to careers in economic development and provide opportunities to gain experience in the field.
The NCEDA Foundation's Fellowship Program provides graduate students with hands-on experience working alongside economic development organizations across North Carolina. Through Career Trek, undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to meet economic development professionals, visit organizations, and learn more about career opportunities within the profession.
“We are grateful to Norfolk Southern for its investment in the next generation of economic development professionals,” said Crystal Morphis, Chair of the NCEDA Foundation. “Through our Fellowship and Career Trek programs, we are able to introduce students to the profession, connect them with experienced economic developers, and provide opportunities to learn firsthand about the work happening in communities across North Carolina. This support will help us continue building a strong pipeline of future economic development leaders.”
The grant is part of Norfolk Southern's commitment to strengthening communities across its 22-state network. Launched in 2023, the company's open-application grant programs support organizations focused on safety, sustainability, workforce development, and community resilience.
“The Thriving Communities Grant Program supports initiatives that bolster local economies and promote long-term resilience,” said Kristin Wong, Director of the Norfolk Southern Foundation & Community Impact. “From sustainability efforts and job training to community-building programs, the grant empowers nonprofit and community organizations working to create lasting impact.”
