The death of a longtime North Carolina community college leader has prompted condolences from leaders across the state. Dr. Michael Elam, President of Halifax Community College since 2016, passed away on January 25 at age 65 after battling thyroid cancer. “Our state, the First Congressional District, and the North Carolina Community College System have experienced a devastating loss,” said Congressman G.K. Butterfield. “Dr. Elam spent many years committed to educating students in underserved communities. He was an outstanding educator who created pathways for his students to advance themselves in their careers and lives. From his focus on education equity and offering people of color opportunities to share their experiences in community college leadership roles, he was an inspiration to his students and a role model for all educators seeking to make a difference in the lives of others.” Elam, a Vance County native, had previously served as President of Roanoke-Chowan Community College.
