Carolina Partners with Chapel Hill to Help Revitalize Downtown and Create Innovation Hub

Since 1958, UNC Chapel Hill has helped facilitate the launch of 786 start-ups that raised a total of $17.6 billion in funding. Of those, 193 are still active and employing more than 3,000 Orange County workers as of 2020. Earlier this week, university officials joined leaders of the Town of Chapel Hill in unveiling a new partnership to revitalize downtown and embrace other economic development opportunities. Known as the Carolina Economic Development Strategy, the plan aims to increase UNC Chapel Hill’s local and regional economic impact by leveraging the university’s talent development, tech transfer and place-based economic assets. “In recent years we have taken several bold business development steps to reinvigorate commercial office space and create infrastructure in our downtown that will bring more office workers and visitors here year-round,” says Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger.
