Tennessee to Continue Recruiting Chinese Business While ‘Reviewing’ Current Policy

Chinese companies doing business in Tennessee employ 5,300 people and invest roughly $600 million in the state. Among foreign countries investing in Tennessee, China has ranked third in jobs since 2015. But strained diplomatic relations between China and the US have led economic development leaders in the Volunteer State to take a close look at their policies for recruiting Chinese firms. Governor Bill Lee notes a recent meeting he and fellow governors had with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in which Pompeo cautioned them about working with companies owned by or connected to China’s communist government. “That’s why we have a very strict policy with regard to any international company that we talk to,” Lee said. “That we know who they are and what their connections are.”
