Stan Kelly: There is Hope on the Horizon for the Triad’s Economy

The Piedmont Triad Region is poised to become the next big economic generator for North Carolina, according to Stan Kelly, President and CEO of the Piedmont Triad Partnership. “That’s what’s on the horizon,” Kelly says. He points to several key trends driving opportunities for the Carolina Core, a regional initiative focused on transformative possibilities along US Highway 421 from Winston-Salem to Fayetteville. One involves demography as more and more people depart densely populated mega-cites for mid-sizes metros and small towns. Re-shaped supply chains mean opportunity for infrastructure-rich regions. A post-pandemic boom in technology and e-commerce puts renewed focus on logistics and distribution operations. Global investments in biotechnology and pharmaceutical production could also foretell job-creation for the Triad. “These trends were already being identified before the pandemic,” Kelly says. “Now they need to be pursued with a new focus and intensity.”
