About One-Third of Economists Expect Recession in 2020
Thirty-four percent of economists surveyed last month by the National Association for Business Economics now predict a US recession in 2021, a nine-point uptick since the same survey was conducted in February. But 38 percent of economists expect the US will enter a recession next year. Two percent of economists said a downturn will begin sometime this year, down from 10 percent in February. Most of the 226 economists who participate in NABE surveys work for corporations or trade associations. The July survey was taken in the two weeks leading up to August 1, prior to the most recent wave of tariff hikes and equity and bond market volatility. A quarter of those surveyed said they expected US-China trade talks would result in no agreement.
