Fayetteville Council Listens to a New Vision for Downtown

Inner-city residential growth is now an indicator of a city’s overall success, according to Steve Auterman, an architect and urban planner with the Pittsburgh consulting firm Urban Design Associates. “Every growing community is seeing more people living downtown,” Auterman told the Fayetteville City Council. His company has completed a plan for the city’s core that includes a new performing arts center, increases residents, relocates local government buildings and creates mixed-use spaces that include retail and offices. The vision requires changing downtown zoning to allow more residential development, create an entertainment district, and connect downtown neighborhoods and parks through pedestrian and bike paths. A state grant funded the $100,000 study.
