Nashville Bill Would Mandate Affordable Housing Payment When Incentives are Granted

The Nashville (TN) city council is considering passage of an ordinance mandating the city make an automatic allocation to an affordable housing fund when awarding financial incentives to businesses. The move comes just as the council considers a $15 million incentive offer to Amazon for a new 5,000-job facility in downtown Nashville. “We don’t look at the social impact of that incentive,” said Councilman Fabian Bedne, who co-sponsored the measure. “I know that incentives have a role to play, but for me it’s how we do it. How do we measure what it does and the impact it has on the city?”
