NC ladling on incentives in battle for executive jobs

The NC Senate Finance Committee has unanimously approved a bill that would increase the per-job cap on Job Development and Investment Grant (JDIG) awards from $6,500 per year to $16,000. The prior cap had been in place since JDIG was legislated in 2002. Sponsors of SB820 believe it will enhance the state’s prospects for recruiting corporate headquarters. “When you get a headquarters located in your state, it becomes the center of gravity for that company,” said Sen. Paul Newton, a Cabarrus County Republican and former Duke Energy executive. “Benefits will flow to existing citizens of North Carolina, even without job creation, but jobs will be created where the corporate headquarters is.”
