Report: Firms with UNC-CH roots generate $10B annually, employ more than 8,500

There are 521 companies whose entrepreneurial roots extend to UNC Chapel Hill, according to a recent report by UNC’s Office of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development. All told, they employ a collective workforce of over 70,000, with nearly 8,600 of these employees based in North Carolina. The number of UNC-connected ventures has grown by 25 percent since January 2017. “These companies and nonprofits connect the academic world to the marketplace,” said Judith Cone, UNC’s vice chancellor for innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development. Cone’s office conducted the analysis on behalf of Innovate Carolina, an intra-campus alliance helping students, faculty and alumni of UNC Chapel Hill convert ideas into innovations.
